Applying for remuneration
If someone copies your work for private, internal or educational purposes, as author, you are entitled to remuneration.
You can apply for the remuneration to which you are entitled as author in two ways:
Via an authors’ society
Don’t pass up the opportunity for fair remuneration for your work and join one of the copyright management companies of Reprobel. Why should you do this? Why shouldn’t you simply request these remunerations directly from Reprobel? For the sake of clarification: Reprobel collects and manages the reprography and public lending right remunerations. That is a more than full-time job that demands all of its attention. What Reprobel collects is distributed among the associated copyright management companies for authors.
What makes these copyright management companies unique is that they employ specialised staff who can provide personal service to their members. They are very well placed to answer your questions, to intervene in disputes, in other words to optimally defend your interests. The copyright management companies often function as a one-stop shop. So be sure to ask about the extra services they offer: legal support and advice on copyright and taxation matters, for example. They can also show you the way towards other copyrights, separate from reprography and public lending right remuneration .
Via Reprobel
Would you still prefer to collect your entitlement directly through Reprobel? Then you should bear in mind that you will have to do without the extra advantages that the copyright management companies offer. You will have to declare your works with Reprobel. As author your dossier will be processed by the Board of Authors of Reprobel. They do not calculate your entitlement themselves, but outsource that to one of the member-societies. From the remuneration to which you are entitled, a reasonable amount is deducted for the administrative and operational costs of Reprobel and of the Association performing the calculation on behalf of Reprobel.
